The report of Census 2011 on literacy is a blessing for the land. 74 percent is almost a double digit decadal increase from the last 2001 census. Beginning of the last century it was 5 percent and after 50 years, the new Independent India was able increase her literacy rate to 25 percent. Since then, literacy is up to a very impressive speed.
Should we then loosen our tie and relax? I feel there is yet no room for complacency.
A little insight into the evaluating criteria of literacy will reveal that we have not achieve literacy in reality. The simple ability to read and write (with understanding) in any of the recognized language is granted literate. Is this sufficient enough to witness the competition in 21st century?
